SecurityLab.ru summarizes the results of HackQuest 2010 competition

The SecurityLab.ru portal and Positive Technologies company have conducted an open information security competition HackQuest 2010.

Over 750 experts from all over the world participated in it, but only 8 of them managed to go through the entire competition. Not only prizes will be received by the competition leaders, but also job offers from the key information security companies that sponsored the event.

The SecurityLab.ru portal celebrated the tenth anniversary on December 15, 2010. Development of this site devoted to information security started in 2000. During these ten years, SecurityLab.ru has grown up from a small site into the leading information security portal in Russian.

As a present to all its readers, SecurityLab.ru conducted a unique competition for information security specialists, HackQuest 2010. From December 15 till December 30, everyone interested could try to carry out several tens of tasks of various difficulty levels. During the competition, the participants had an opportunity to check their skills in the field of security estimation, vulnerability detection and exploitation, reverse engineering, searching for backdoors, and web application analysis.

The competition was conducted by the Positive Technologies company in collaboration with the Chaos Constructions'2010 (CC10) festival and the "Hacker" magazine.

Dmitry Evteev, a leading expert of the "Positive Research" center established by the Positive Technologies company, emphasizes, "Real weaknesses discovered by the Positive Technologies experts in the course of penetration testing, business application analysis, and PCI DSS compliance estimation underlie the game infrastructure. This feature makes Hack Quest 2010 to stand out among other competitions; it allowed us to simulate “field” conditions most plausibly."

Over 759 specialists from 20 countries (including Russia, China, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Germany, the USA, etc.) took part in the contest. Eight participants managed to cope with all tasks and score the prize number of points. It took the competition leaders from 3 to 7 days of continuous work in the game network infrastructure to pass through all the stages.

According to the competition results, we marked out three leaders among the participants who coped with all tasks:

rdot.org (the first place);
Andrey1800 (the second place);
• nucro (the third place).

Not only prized provided by Positive Technologies and sponsors of the event (including ESET) will be received by the competition leaders, but also job offers from the competition organizers.

As Dmitry notes, "many participants showed an extremely high level of technical knowledge and skills. Such competitions present an effective method to get experts involved in the company, while it can take years to find them via traditional methods."

A separate prize was awarded to the command darklife.ws, which managed to cope with the special contest task and scored 137 points. darklife.ws receives robot construction set iRobot Creative.

According to Dmitry, "the idea to integrate real protection features to the competition infrastructure provides a great opportunity for software and information security system vendors to test the efficiency of their products in real-life circumstances."

Detailed information about the competition results can be found on the SecurityLab.ru portal. The network infrastructure distribution kits will be distributed in the course of events organized by Positive Technologies.
